MAY WE INTRODUCE OURSELVES?

Our team

OFFICES

Because we love what we do

Our team of interior designers, interior designers, architects and fitters - they all have experience, style confidence, passion and the unconditional pursuit of perfection - starting with the initial discussion with our customers, through ideas and selection of colors, materials and shapes, right through to delivery and assembly. Our business principle of not following every supposed trend breathlessly, but rather consciously setting our own accents, has made the Bornhold brand an institution known beyond the borders of Hamburg. But ultimately the trust of our customers has made us the top address among Hamburg's furnishers - and we are a little proud of that.

  • I love the element of surprise. A sofa doesn't always have to be against the wall. Freestanding in the room, it becomes the central focus for families, for reading, learning, playing and entertaining, and as an eye-catcher it becomes a design object. I try to create something greater than the sum of all the parts with my customers. But this requires ideas, plenty of experience and a great deal of empathy. And sometimes persistence to gain trust in the solution that I propose as an expert.

Sabina Schwitters is Head of Interior Design at Bornhold.

  • For me, furnishing means personalizing, creating excitement, developing a coherent overall concept. That means listening, listening, listening - in order to recognize and analyze the customer's needs. In the contract business, I want to get to know the target group that uses the rooms. Young, old, hip, traditional... Then I can personalize.

You can compare it to cooking: individual ingredients make the taste special. We don't sell ready meals here.

Every day I am delighted to be able to work for a company with such a long tradition, great experience and a holistic approach to consulting, planning and implementation.

Mike Bergmann has been working at Bornhold as Sales Manager and Interior Designer since January 2020.

  • My favorite interior design style? Modernity with a touch of homely romance, and above all a cosmopolitan attitude to life. A mix of natural materials such as wooden floors with metal lamps, the combination of shiny surfaces with textiles in floral patterns. Even the most everyday things can be presented in an unusual way.

Petra Bingmann has been working for Bornhold as an interior designer for over 40 years.

INTERIOR DESIGN

  • "I am interested in developing a spatial structure and finding functional areas that need to be allocated sensibly. It is important to pay attention to family structures, to maintain shorter or longer routes, distances and alignments, to include the view from the window, the incidence of light that one should turn towards or away from. With this information, I begin to structure and design a room. For me, this is how holistic planning with a consistent language is created. This is how an apartment becomes a unit."

Kirsten Flaig is a qualified interior designer, was self-employed for 25 years and has worked for Bornhold since 2014.

  • She is particularly fond of the classics: “ClassiCon and Walter Knoll inspire me just as much as the Italian manufacturers such as Poltrona Frau, Flexform and Giorgetti with their fantastic surfaces in fine leathers and woods.”

Since 2018, Melanie Janssen has been strengthening the Bornhold team in consulting and planning.

  • He could actually be relaxing in his garden and the family's multi-generational house for a long time, but he misses the professional task. The prospect of supporting the Schwitters family and the Bornhold team is all the more appealing to him - a task that he has been fulfilling with commitment, his expertise and many years of knowledge since 2006.

  • "My absolute dream job - even after almost 25 years: Working with customers to find out how they would like to live and then implementing a coherent concept together."

Dr. Anke Kähler has a doctorate in art history and has been working as an interior designer at Bornhold for 20 years and still enjoys it as much as she did on the first day.

  • How do I work? First, I look at the conditions of the rooms, the architecture, the history, the geographical location; this influences the design. I try to filter out my clients' interior design style using mood boards.

HISTORY

Our history shapes
our brand

Bornhold was founded in 1917 and has been an owner-managed company ever since. The brothers Walther and Robert Bornhold opened the "Workshop for Home Art" in Neustadt and their own factory in Osterfeldstrasse. Until the 1970s, the family employed around 600 people in Hamburg-Lokstedt, who produced all of their furniture in-house in the in-house upholstery workshops, carpentry workshops and sewing shops. Building their own furniture, made to measure, has been the core of the Bornhold brand from the very beginning. In keeping with this tradition, the in-house brand "Bornhold - Manufaktur" was further developed in 2001, which designs and produces upholstered and cabinet furniture that contribute to the furniture store's unmistakable style: classic modernism.

A strategically important step was the company's move to Neuer Wall in 1949 in order to be able to present exclusive furniture and high-quality furnishings to Hamburg society on a large area in the city center.

The married couple Sabina & Wilko Schwitters have been at the helm of Bornhold since 2009 and their sons Tammo and Tjarko have been with the company for many years and will carry the long tradition into the next generation. The enthusiasm for Bornhold is palpable in the Schwitters family and everyone is working together on ideas to lead this family business into the future.

In 2016, the company moved to the banks of the Alster. Bornhold presents itself in modern premises with a view of Hamburg's Outer Alster on an exhibition area of 1,000 m2.
